2019 PS4 exclusive Days Gone feels a little more relevant given the current events of the world. What with COVID-19 keeping us all trapped in our homes, I thought this would be the perfect time to try and finish this shelf sitter.
You play as Deacon St. John, a biker and Mongrels MC member who now wanders the wasteland as a bounty hunter and mercenary, selling his services in exchange for camp credits. Throughout the game, your main objective as Deacon is to reunite with your wife Sarah, who you learn more about through flashbacks.
At first this game came across as a slow burner and don’t get me wrong, it takes some time to get it’s hooks into you but when it does, you will surely enjoy every moment of it. Some parts feel so well put together, the crafting system is a main example, brilliantly put together and constantly feeding that need to explore and gather more materials. Especially being a bit of a hoarder by nature, I can’t help but lose hours stopping and picking up those cedar trees.
I would guess that currently I am about 75% of the way through the game and it has felt like a slog at some points. The immersion is great at times but at least once each play session I am drawn out of this engaging world by the creeping feeling that all of these quests are just fetch quests made fancier with different speech. This of course takes away from some of the energy the game is trying to put across.
One of the best features of this game is that map. Holy shit. When I unlocked Iron Mike’s camp I thought this map was big enough, and then the next big reveal happened and I was blown away. The varying scenic landscapes really add to the feeling that you’re traversing this giant state and sometimes, you just have to pull up your bike and stare out at the beautiful mountains.
So far, this game has served as a fun little number, that feels maybe like one large fetch quest whose story stretches on a little too long for what it’s trying to achieve.
I’ll come back for a part 2 once I’ve wrapped up the story and platinumed it.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
